261 Arrival

Yue Jiaojiao replied with a soft hmm.

Zhao Zhan picked her up in his arms amidst the woman’s cries of surprise. He lowered his head and called out for Chengfeng before walking back home.

Yue Jiaojiao couldn’t help but raise her head to look at him.

In the beginning, he was just a hunter who would get easily nervous from a few words of praise, but now it seemed that he had become determined and courageous.

He was now like a steady mountain, always being there for her and blocking any danger from reaching her.

Yue Jiaojiao couldn’t help but raise her hand to graze his stubble, and then her fingers mischievously pinched his earlobe.

Zhao Zhan saw her smiling eyes and let her do as she pleased.

They went down the mountain very quickly. Zhao Zhan was at the entrance of the house when he ran into Sun Jiyan, who had just finished his consultation.

“Zhao Zhan,” Sun Jiyan quickly glanced at Yue Jiaojiao in Zhao Zhan’s arms and then looked away. “I have something to tell you.”

“Alright.”

“It’s right in front-”

“Is that Zhao Zhan?”

Suddenly, a commotion occurred not far away. Zhao Zhan turned his head in the middle of his sentence and saw a group of people walking towards them through the light of the torches.

Yue Jiaojiao tugged at Zhao Zhan to get him to put her down. Subconsciously, she clutched his hand tightly. “Zhao Zhan, you still haven’t told me what you were up to last night.”

Jiaojiao was now alert from the shouts. Zhao Zhan spoke quickly before those people came over. “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.”

Yue Jiaojiao wanted to say something, but two armed officers had already arrived in front of them. They glanced at the few people who were still standing at the same spot and said in an aggressive tone, “Which one of you is Zhao Zhan?”

“I am.”

Zhao Zhan pushed Yue Jiaojiao behind him and looked at the officers with an expressionless face. “May I ask why you are looking for me?”

“The Magistrate has some questions for you. Come with us.”

As the officer spoke, he gripped the hilt of his knife tightly and stood on either side of Zhao Zhan, his gaze fixed on him. “You made it hard for us to find you. You left Huai County pretty quickly.”

“Officer, is there any misunderstanding? This friend of mine is an honest and upright person, are you looking for the wrong person?”

Yang Dashan stood in the crowd and gathered his courage to speak up. He looked at Zhao Zhan with a worried face.

“Are you questioning the Magistrate? I don’t care if he’s honest or not, but if you have anything to say, go to the County Magistrate and appeal to him.”

Yue Jiaojiao had already rushed back to her room and took out a purse from the money box. When she came out again, she gave each of the two officers a piece of silver. “You must have had a long journey from Huai County. It’s dinner time now. Why don’t you have dinner at my house before you set off?”

The officer weighed the silver in his hand and looked at each other. His originally bad tone softened a little. “There’s no need. Your husband is charged for offending someone he shouldn’t have. Our County Magistrate has always been impartial in his work. As long as you speak the truth, he will not wrongly accuse a good person.”

The two of them had revealed some information to Yue Jiaojiao.

“Officers.” Lizheng, who had just received the news, stumbled to the front of the crowd in a hurry. He shivered in fright when he saw the two of them. “I’m the head of this village. May I ask why the two of you have come today?”

“That’s enough. We still have to hurry.” The two officers waved their hands in frustration, and one of them even pulled out the tip of their blade.

“Get out of the way, don’t block the way, we just have to do our job!”

The crowd of bystanders from Willow Village were all frightened and made way for him.
