253 Greed

However, to everyone’s surprise, Zhao Wan did not relent after hearing this. Instead, she resisted even more fiercely. She grabbed her hair and tore it hard, screaming in fear, “I don’t want to go to the police station. I won’t make a police report. Leave! All of you!”

Zhao Wan’s fierce resistance was beyond everyone’s expectations.

Mother Zhao quickly climbed onto the bed and restrained Zhao Wan. She was afraid that she would do something stupid and hurt herself. Father Zhao’s tears streamed down his face as he looked at the police officer beside him in panic. “What should we do now? Wan Wan is unwilling to go to the police station.”

The captain of the police frowned. He was at a loss.

Seeing that the two parties were at a deadlock, the policewoman thought carefully about the little girl’s reaction just now and thought that she might be afraid to leave the house. She took the initiative to suggest, “Why don’t we take the samples at home? We can bring them back for examination.”

“That works too!” Father Zhao seemed to find his resolve and hurriedly nodded in agreement.

But when Zhao Wan heard what they said, she suddenly roared at them crazily, “Leave! I don’t want to be examined! I’m fine, I’m fine! Leave! I don’t want to see you!”

Mother Zhao was afraid that Zhao Wan would hurt herself, so she held her arm tightly. Seeing that she was about to lose her grip on her daughter, Father Zhao quickly came over to help. He pulled the thin and small Zhao Wan into his arms and coaxed her with tears of despair, “Okay, okay, okay. We won’t go. We won’t go.”

He looked guiltily at the two police officers standing by the bed and said helplessly, “Why don’t you go back first? We’ll contact you after we calm our daughter down.”

The policewoman and the captain looked at each other and nodded. “Alright then. Let’s go to the village to investigate first and see if there are any witnesses. However, you have to remember that she musn’t shower and that the sample must be taken within twenty-four hours. Otherwise, the evidence will be destroyed and we won’t be able to trace him.”

“Alright, thank you, police officer.” Father Zhao nodded repeatedly and made a mental note of the police officer’s words.

After sending them off, Dong Chang seemed to have noticed something. He raised his bleary eyes and looked at the Zhao parents. “Uncle, Auntie, can you leave Wan Wan and I alone for awhile? I think I can persuade her.”

Father Zhao was very unwilling for his daughter to be alone with another male, but he remembered that Dong Chang was an honest and mature child and the teachers were always singing his praises. Besides, Dong Chang and his daughter…

Perhaps Dong Chang really had a solution?

At the thought of this, Father Zhao patted Mother Zhao, who was unwilling to leave her daughter, and slowly said, “Let’s go out and leave the two children alone to talk. Perhaps Wan Wan will come round.”

Mother Zhao looked at Dong Chang. What had happened to her daughter had created an immense stir in the village. She thought that Dong Chang definitely would not want anything to do with her daughter again. But to her surprise, he did not despise her, but even took the initiative to help Wan Wan at a critical moment. She was touched.

Mother Zhao nodded at Dong Chang in relief. “Alright, I’ll leave Wan Wan to you. Call for us if anything happens. We’ll be in the living room.”

“Alright, don’t worry, Uncle and Auntie.” Dong Chang waited for the two of them to leave before closing the door tightly. Then, he returned and sat in front of Zhao Wan, pulling her into his arms.

The scene he had just witnessed in the Zhao house made him wish he was dead. It was as if someone had stabbed his heart with countless needles. He was in such agony that he could barely breathe.

It was only when he held Wan Wan in his arms that he realized that he was still alive and that there was still hope.

Dong Chang stroked her messy hair. He held her against her broad chest to give her warmth and security. He wanted her to know that when she was at her most helpless, she could choose to rely on him.

He would do anything for Zhao Wan.

Zhao Wan gradually relaxed in his arms. Even though the two of them were just leaning against each other without saying a word, Wan Wan felt strangely at ease. Her tears fell uncontrollably as she silently clutched Dong Chang’s clothes and sobbed.

Dong Chang felt crushed when he sensed that the girl in his arms was trying her best to suppress her weeping. He closed his eyes in pain and took a deep breath. Finally, he asked, “Why are you unwilling to go to the police station? Is it because I’m here?”

The slender body in his arms stiffened. Dong Chang immediately frowned, but he did not dare to push too hard. He could only try his best to promise her, “I’ll always be on your side. Don’t be afraid.”

Zhao Wan sniffed and did not speak. She lowered his gaze slightly and saw his leg injury. She immediately choked and asked, “What happened to your leg?”

Dong Chang smiled nonchalantly. “It’s just a small injury. I didn’t mean to go back on my word. It’s just that with my leg in this state, I couldn’t climb over your back wall.”

He was talking about why he had broken his promise that night. Zhao Wan understood, so she cried even louder. She grabbed Dong Chang’s clothes tightly and rubbed her tears on him.

Zhao Wan wanted to die at the thought of that terrifying night, but she still yearned for Dong Chang’s warm embrace. She wanted to see her parents again.
