Chapter 111
Gilent, Harden, and Crutin all eyed the knight, dumbfounded. It was obviously a knight.
“What should we do?” Harden asked Gilent, frowning.
“We will still kill them as ordered by the marquis. Who’s going to do it?”
“I will.”
Crutin, holding a large axe, began moving on his horse.
“You can’t do it alone. The Galim is fully armored and that lance looks dangerous too. I will join you.”
Harden also joined Crutin, pulling out his long sword.
“He’s coming!” Harden shouted as Joonbum pulled on Nite’s reins.
*
“Open the doors and move out!”
Everyone looked to where Daryl and Louise were shouting.
Joonbum felt his heavy breathing and Nite also seemed to notice its master’s tension. There were three men in front and seven more right behind them, all on horses. It was his first real battle. He was tense, but he wasn’t afraid.
The Galim began charging as Joonbum pulled on the reins. Galims, unlike regular horses, were big, strong, and exceptionally fast.
“He’s coming!”
Two of the men charged on their horses and Joonbum aimed his lance at them. The distance closed within a second and Joonbum swung his lance across. The lance struck both the men’s bodies.
Everyone was shocked, including Gilent. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. With just one swing, both men let out small gasps, and then they were dead. Their bodies were twisted into abnormal angles, dangling above their horses. The horses did not stop and ran off as they were scared.
“Captain!”
Gilent came back to his senses. The attack wasn’t over. The knight was already upon them, thrusting his lance.
‘This bastard!’
He could not say it out loud as he had to quickly block the attack with his shield. With a loud clang from the collision, Gilent felt the strong impact in his arms and the shield was pushed back, hitting his face and breaking his nose.
‘S**t!’
He could not even moan. It was hard to pull himself up and even the horse was trying hard to not fall down. It was unbelievable.
That moment, a sudden vicious gust of wind was heard and Gilent quickly cowered. But it was too late. Gilent was struck on the head and fell off his horse. The helmet that he was still wearing was completely crushed.
“MONSTER!”
The horsemen behind flinched. They could not make sense out of what was happening. It was the same for the thieves and the merchants. The merchants knew there was a knight with them and they had seen the knight enjoy good meals and train throughout the day. But it did not mean much to them until now. They never thought that a single knight could make that much of a difference against hundreds of thieves.
But he was making a difference.
‘It’s working.’
Joonbum kept charging on Nite. The armor was hot, but it was bearable.
‘Thanks to my ice pack.’
The armor was hot because of the scorching summer heat, but it was pretty cold inside the armor due to Joonbum’s ice pack. Nite’s armor was also equipped with ice packs so it allowed the Galim to go on a rampage without any problems.
Nite charged and the thieves on foot picked up their spears against it. Horses that blocked the way were trampled by Nite and the humans on them did not survive either. The spears were deflected by both Joonbum and Nite’s armor. They were instead attacked by Joonbum’s long lance. Blood poured out from their corpses as it inflicted huge wounds on them.
“ARGH!”
Ten men on horses died in an instant. Everyone fell silent. It was an unbelievable sight. At that moment, Nite began charging towards the thieves in the back. The thieves and merchants eyed the Galim with confused looks but quickly came to their senses.
“NO!”
“He’s crazy!”
The knight was charging alone at hundreds of thieves. They began preparing to attack.
“Is he charging alone?”
“Show him what we’ve got!”
“Get READY!”
The thieves pulled out their spears and began moving.
“Let’s get revenge for Gilent! Kill HIM!”
“KILL HIM!”
Horses began galloping and the area quickly filled with dust. The thieves on foot tried to follow, but they had to back away from the dust caused by the horses.
A terrible sound of horses and men screaming were heard through the dust. The dust did not go away and the screaming continued. The thieves began to fear the worst. It was just one man, but the screams did not falter, it was the sound of a massacre.
Soon, a wind blew and cleared the dust away from the battlefield. There were only about 30 men left out of the 150 that rode out.
A shout was heard at that moment from the merchants’ side. Mercenaries and merchants alike began charging at the thieves as they realized what had happened.
“RUN!”
“NO! We just need to kill him-”
The man’s head suddenly flung backward and he fell dead.
“RUN! RETREAT!”
The surviving horsemen began running away and the thieves seemed to be in disarray, not knowing what to do. They were only used to hunting down fleeing merchants after the horsemen trampled them.
‘That was dangerous,’ Joonbum thought as he put his handgun back on his belt. He took up his lance again and followed after them.
“Kill the thieves!”
“They’re coming! STOP HIM!”
Joonbum charged at the thieves first. They tried to stop him by pointing their spears forward, but it was no use — they were trampled upon the charging Nite. Their bones were crushed and some died instantly. Their formation was destroyed and Henderson and his mercenaries attacked them with the opening.
“HELP! LET ME LIVE!”
“ARGH!”
Some thieves began running away. It was a lost battle.
Thieves were killed left and right as the mercenaries on horses trumped the remaining thieves on foot. The armed workers who joined also fought fiercely. There were hundreds of thieves running away, but the mercenaries followed them on horses to kill them.
“Everyone, get on your horses! We’ll kill or capture them! We will sell any living thieves as slaves! Join me if you want a share!”
Some workers began hopping on horses that were abandoned by the thieves.
“YOU! Who are you? Identify yourself!”
Three thieves on horses did not run and approached Joonbum while shouting. They didn’t seem like normal thieves.
‘Hmm. They must be from the marquis.’
It was obvious. They closed in on Joonbum with spears. He let out a sigh and spoke out.
“Thieves demanding a name from a knight? Did Marquis Dunahan Beneth instruct you to do that?”
“How dare you talk to the marquis like that… Ugh.”
The man seemed to realize that he had made a mistake. Joonbum looked at them coldly.
“Idiocy. That’s what got you into this situation.”
Joonbum spoke coldly. They had revealed themselves too easily.
“ARGH! You will not live to tell anyone else then!”
Joonbum grinned. The man was angry, but it made it easy to read him. He charged at Joonbum alone.
“Is that all you’ve got? Are you even a knight? Oh wait, maybe you’re just a servant? Hmm?” Joonbum taunted as the man swung his spear frantically at Joonbum. Joonbum easily parried all the attacks with his lance.
“Jordan! Keep calm!”
“We should attack together!”
Jordan backed away at the voices, but Joonbum taunted him again.
“Right! You should all attack at once if you don’t know how to fight! You’re not a knight anyway! You’re all thieving scums! The marquis is dumb to hire such men as his servants!”
“HOW DARE YOU!”
Jordan charged at Joonbum. Joonbum glanced around, then pulled up his lance while all three men were prepared with their spears to defend themselves. At that moment, Joonbum whipped out his handgun and shot them. All of them dropped to the ground with gunshot wounds on their heads. They were all dead.
“WHOAAA!”
A loud chant erupted from behind. Merchants and workers alike were shouting victoriously, gathering around Joonbum.
“JOONBUM! CHRISTOS!”
“JOONBUM! CHRISTOS!”
The chant of Joonbum’s name echoed across the plains.
