Chapter 144: Refugees (2)
‘But it’s amazing that he survived with that wound.’
It was more than what any potion could heal. The wound was deep and he had lost too much blood. Even a top-grade potion would have been useless if he didn’t get a blood transfusion.
-He lost too much blood. A top-grade potion will be useless.-
The Ainos healer shook his head as they examined the wounds. It was that severe. But the fact that he survived and regained consciousness was unbelievable. It was Joonbum who played a major role in saving his life. He checked Girotin’s blood type and used blood packs to save him.
‘Luckily, I learned simple medical skills from the American army. But it is a problem.’
Joonbum frowned. They were not using all kinds of potions that the Ainos had for emergencies. There were too many people visiting to heal everyone by using potions and there was no telling when they would be able to return to the forest to create more potions.
‘I might not be able to return to Earth even after ten years.’
That was another problem. There was no telling if they would be able to return to where the Gate opened deep within the mountain range.
‘I probably can get through with the Marauder, but the road might be damaged. I should check it often.’
There was no telling what the future held. The volcano erupted every so often and the land shook each time. Because of that, the mountain range landscape was changing constantly. Joonbum had no choice but to save his supplies.
‘I’m not a hero. I’m just an ordinary person who is trying to help.’
He was not any more extraordinary than any of the people here. He only helped when he could. He frowned as he thought of his past when he was used by the people around him and shook it away.
“Sir! We got the plants you asked for. Check if they are correct.”
The Ainos and humans came with baskets full of various plants and herbs. They began taking out what they had gathered and began showing them to Joonbum.
“This is mugwort, right? It’s little bigger, but I’m sure. This looks like the mushroom you mentioned…”
“I think this here is the Sanghwang Mushroom you talked about. It’s too big though.”
A man took out a big mushroom about the size of a small table. That was only the beginning. Famous herbs known for their power and cost had been gathered. One of them was a ginseng that looked like it was ten thousand years old. It was so large that its size was bigger than a human arm. Joonbum laughed hollowly.
‘Ginseng the size of a baby…! I wonder what the world will say if I bring this back to Earth.’
People began taking out what they had gathered and it all consisted of similar herbs. As for most of the herbs and plants that had been gathered, he was certain of their effects on Earth, so it was fine. What was good was that the Ainos were skilled healers that used herbs.
‘When combined with my knowledge and books…’
With all these herbs, the Ainos would be exceptional at healing.
‘But there are too many people. Even the Galians are coming over now.’
The land was right by the border, so Galian people coming for help was inevitable.
‘I have a bunch of books, computers, and videos. I should teach people modern medical skills.’
There was an abundance of patients to test on. Joonbum grinned.
‘They will learn with real-life experience.’
It would be mad to do such things on Earth, but he didn’t mind that here.
‘I will just use potions if things go bad so they won’t die.’
That was his backup. The potions were almost like a cure-all. There was no need to fear any accidents.
‘I’ll teach them how to do surgery, use herbs, and try it out. I can just use potions if it doesn’t work.’
As he thought of how he was going to provide instructions, the sheer number of patients became like a treasure to him.
‘Oh, am I a doctor now or what?’
He chuckled at the thought.
“Okay, move everything to the medicine room. I will teach everyone how to use and care for different herbs. Oh, and let all the sick people come to the village if there are any. We will treat them all, but there will be a price.”
Some seemed to be happy at the news, but some became grim. Joonbum knew why.
‘They don’t have anything to pay with.’
People were barely making a living here. They didn’t have any money.
‘I was an ungrateful bastard back then.’
He remembered how he ranted that his life was so bad in the old days. He felt ashamed that he thought he was unfortunate.
“Don’t worry. I will consider anything, even labor, as payment. All of that will be considered, so let all the sick come without hesitation.”
“Oh!”
“That’s great!”
People mumbled to each other as they heard the news.
“Then move out!”
Joonbum shouted to the gatherers and they moved to the medicine room where some kids were waiting for them. A kid sitting at a table had a laptop in front of him.
“Tell me the name of the herb you brought, the weight and condition.”
“I will go first. I brought ginseng and…”
The Ainos kid began typing down a detailed description of the herb and a kid waiting next to him came to label the herb and store it.
